For CEO Jim Canton, "A job well done" is making a positive impact for others.

CEO and Chief Credit Officer Jim Canton has achieved a lot in his 40-plus years in banking. But for a man who has excelled in his numerous leadership roles, what matters most to Jim isn’t what he has accomplished, but what he has helped others accomplish for themselves. “In business, if I have a positive impact on the results of my organization and the prosperity of my customers, that will be a job well done,” says Jim.

The Joplin, Missouri-native joined our team as President and Chief Credit Officer in 2018. Later that year, he was promoted to CEO. Jim’s banking career included stops in Los Angeles and Kansas City before he moved to Oklahoma in the early 1980s. Jim jokes that what brought him to Oklahoma was a “1981 Toyota Celica GT 5-speed and Ryder Truck to bring my furniture.” What kept him here was the opportunity to serve close-knit communities like the kind where he grew up. He founded First Commercial Bank in 1996 and led that organization for 20 years before selling it. “I wanted to get back into a community bank,” Jim says. “My customers wanted to be back in a community bank environment as well.” Thankfully, Jim joined our team and has led us ever since.

When it comes to his work, Jim says he’s most inspired by helping employees realize their “untapped potential” and putting it to work for our customers. Talk to Jim long enough though and the conversation will quickly turn to his family. His definition of success is “raising two young men to be good men, Christians, citizens and ultimately, fathers, husbands, and through their own children, to realize how much I love them.”

It is Jim’s family first, community-minded philosophy that has served him (and us!) so well as a leader at our bank. Jim believes that the most important thing a community bank can do is foster and encourage opportunity for its customers.

“As I’ve gotten older, I realize that I’ll never change the entire world,” says Jim. “But if I have a positive impact on the people I’m connected with, maybe they will change the world.”
